It’s July 4th weekend and that means people all across the country are getting ready to kick off summer with this extra special long weekend.  We’re grabbing our bathing suits, spraying on suntan lotion and packing our bags.  It’s time to lock our doors, shut off our phones and take a summer vacation for July 4th.

Whenever I go on vacation whether it’s for an extra long weekend, a road trip or a getaway for a couple of weeks there are always a few things I like to do.  I’m a planner and I always will be.  I usually don’t do anything without planning ahead and that includes going on vacation.

If you’re headed out of town this weekend or you’re staying in here a few ideas to keep you busy over July 4th long weekend.

Try something new

If you’re adventurous you may want to ride down a zip line or jump off a platform with a bungee cord, but trying something new doesn’t need to be this extreme.  It can be as simple as trying a new restaurant, visiting a new neighborhood or stepping out of your comfort zone.

As Gillian Michaels says “Get comfortable being uncomfortable.”  It may be scary at first thought, but it will most likely be a once in a lifetime experience.

Read a good book.

There is nothing more relaxing than getting lost in a good book.  Actually I guess that depends on the type of books you like to read.  I balled my eyes out while reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and the one liners in White Girl Problems by Babe Walker had me laughing so hard I cried.

All this to say a little time out at the beach, in bed or poolside with a good book is a great way to spend a long weekend.

Visit a tourist landmark

Even if you stay home during the long weekend, go out and play tourist for the day.  I recently did this in my city and it was a lot of fun.  I spent the day outside walking around hitting up famous landmarks.

I didn’t spend any money sightseeing so the entire day cost me nothing more than an ice cream cone.  It gave me a reason to spend the day outside without wandering aimlessly.

Splurge on something

Just once spend money on something you normally wouldn’t.  I truly believe in spending money on experiences and what better time to do that than when you’re on vacation.  If you’re in Texas go and see a football game, if you’re in New York go and see a Broadway play and if you’re in California go to Venice Beach.

Thanks to spending a little bit on myself once in a while I’ve got to experience some pretty cool things like boating through the bayou in New Orleans and riding the roller coaster at New York New York Hotel in Las Vegas.  This are two things I will never forget.

Happy July 4th!
